I graduated
in 2002 from Manchester Metropolitan University with a degree
in Three Dimensional Design. After just one year in business, I postponed
my career in favour of travelling to Thailand and Australia,
a trip that lasted eighteen months. I returned to my home
town of Leamington Spa, March 2005, where I'm continuing
to make jewellery along side my mother, who is also a contemporary
jeweller.
My work has featured in
prestigious exhibitions such as Dazzle, Ruthin Craft Centre, The Scottish Gallery and the V&A shop.
Inspired
by ancient artefacts, forms in nature and the manipulation
of materials, my latest work continues to evolve from ideas
conceived during my studies with themes of repetition, rhythm
and the relationship between individuals and the greater
mass.
Using anodised aluminium and silver Elytra was an exploration into the colour
and repetition of a shape based on beetle wings to create
bold, organic forms. Movement, noise and smoothly blended
colours stimulate the senses and beg the wearer to play.
My new collection, Vane, is a continuation from Elytra in it's use of repetition, rhythm and colour, but the forms I am creating are quite different. By threading aluminium discs onto a flexible cord the silver coloured edges suggest a seemingly solid form, however, in contradiction, the negative spaces in between expose bright colours that catch the light as they disappear out of view, defying the usual rules of light and shade on an object. |

At the Design Show Liverpool 2008 I was awarded the prize for Best in Show - Jewellery. The award was judged and sponsored by hairdresser Andrew Collinge and Jemima Payne of the Liverpool TATE gallery. The prize was a free stand at next year's show. I was fortunate enough to be short listed for Young Designer of the year at the UK Jewellery Awards 2008 but sadly I lost to Royal College graduate Anna De Costa. Click here to find out more about the UK Jewellery Awards 2008
Earlier this year I was also fortunate to win The Kayman award from the British Jewellers Association. Here's what the judges had to say:
“These pieces provide an innovative and interesting use of mixed metals and are at the cutting-edge of jewellery design and production. The result is strong, flexible, vivid and eye-catching designs that are also hugely wearable.”
