My Background

From an early age I have always had a passion for making things and needless to say, art was my favourite subject at school. However, my love of jewellery design came much later and quite unexpectedly, even despite having a jeweller for a Mum. As a child I was also a keen performer, taking dance classes from the age of four and later drama, theatre arts and music both in and out of school. While I got by in academic subjects, I excelled in the arts and it was always clear that my life would follow a creative path.

I come from a very artistic family and while my mother, Jane, makes jewellery, my father, Neil, is a fine art painter. As the eldest of three I paved the way for my ciblings who both pursued careers in dance.  My sister, Mirren, recently qualified as a teacher while my brother, William, is a professional dancer for the Stuttgart Ballet. My family influence me in a variety of ways which broaden my experience of the arts in general and enrich my own work.

My fascination in jewellery was only realised towards the end of my studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. There I completed a degree in Three Dimensional Design which covered a variety of disciplines, until my final year when I chose to specialise in jewellery.

After graduating I exhibited at New Designers, London, then moved back to my home town where I shared my Mum's studio.  Twelve months later, and with itchy feet, I opted to take a year out. I spent a while in Thailand before travelling around Australia where I settled in Sydney for the most part. Eighteen months later I returned to rejoin my Mum, refreshed, inspired and broke, but with the help of a grant from the Arts Council in 2005 I was able to improve the making process and refine my designs to achieve a higher level of finish. I was very fortunate to have access to a workshop so soon after graduating, not to mention access to my Mum's knowledge of jewellery making and selling.  Working with her was an invaluable experience, not to mention great fun.  Thanks Mum!

In May 2009 I moved myself and my workshop to Sunny Brighton where I continue to make and sell work from my studio on the beach.  If you're ever passing please call in.
